New commission: La Tour de Montréal

James is thrilled to have been asked to photograph a new observation tower situated in the port of Montreal.

The tower embraces the language of the industrial vernacular architecture of Montreal’s old port - steel cranes, loading towers, grain lifts and silos. A cantilevered observation deck at level 12 offers expansive and generous views of the city’s historic quarter and the downtown core.

The photographs have been commissioned by architects Provencher Roy.

New publication: Architectural Review

James is very pleased to have a series of photographs published in the April issue of the UK’s The Architectural Review.

The pictures are from a collaboration with Montreal’s Pelletier de Fontenay and Berlin’s Kuehn Malvezzi to illustrate the new Montreal Insectarium.

Canadian Architect Award of Excellence for photography

James is excited to share news of receiving the 2022/23 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence for photography.

The national award is given once a year in Canada, in recognition of outstanding photography of architecture.

The jury commented: “There is an aura of mystery encompassing this image. The scene is very cinematic, with its characters in action and the fog that gently envelops the whole space. Something seems about to happen! The building rises like a character too. And then, the balance between the colours is just perfect.”

Particular attention has been paid to weaving the building into the wider city fabric with a series of shared public spaces - including a new home for Toronto's main bus terminus, a pedestrian bridge, walkways and an expansive elevated public park straddling the railway tracks. It's recently been voted the city's favourite new tall building.
