James is pleased to share news of receiving this year's Canadian Architect Photo Award of Excellence. The award is announced annually in December by Canadian Architect magazine, Canada’s national magazine of record for architecture.
The photograph shows the El-Aleph Guesthouse, designed by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects. The building is a 28 foot cube clad in copper shingle, set on a remote and wild rocky outcrop on Nova Scotia's southern shore. It draws on the language, craft and construction techniques of Nova Scotia's vernacular architecture - fish sheds, boat houses and others - that have been a constant muse for the MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple studio.
