Blackbird, a house James has photographed on behalf of British architects Nick Lyons and Hamish Herford, has won a 2023 RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) National Award.
The house sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the English Cotswolds.
James is thrilled to have been asked to photograph a new observation tower situated in the port of Montreal.
The tower embraces the language of the industrial vernacular architecture of Montreal’s old port - steel cranes, loading towers, grain lifts and silos. A cantilevered observation deck at level 12 offers expansive and generous views of the city’s historic quarter and the downtown core.
The photographs have been commissioned by architects Provencher Roy.

The pictures are from a collaboration with Montreal’s Pelletier de Fontenay and Berlin’s Kuehn Malvezzi to illustrate the new Montreal Insectarium.

The national award is given once a year in Canada, in recognition of outstanding photography of architecture.
The jury commented: “There is an aura of mystery encompassing this image. The scene is very cinematic, with its characters in action and the fog that gently envelops the whole space. Something seems about to happen! The building rises like a character too. And then, the balance between the colours is just perfect.”

The awards are organized by The Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba associations of architects. They take place every two years to celebrate outstanding creativity and skill in architecture, interior design and landscape architecture across the three provinces.

The UK's Wilkinson Eyre has commissioned James to photograph a series of photographs of CIBC SQUARE, a pair of new glass towers just completed in Toronto, in collaboration with Adamsons Associates.
The mixed-use project is located by Union Rail Station in the heart of downtown. Particular attention has been paid to weaving the building into the wider city fabric with a series of shared public spaces - including a new home for Toronto's main bus terminus, a pedestrian bridge, walkways and an expansive elevated public park straddling the railway tracks. It's recently been voted the city's favourite new tall building.

Canada’s celebrated MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects has commissioned James to photograph a series of new houses for a forthcoming book about the practice. James spent ten days travelling around Nova Scotia in late September for the project. Early autumn is a special time of year in the maritimes as the summer comes to a close, and his visit was blessed with beautiful misty light.

The Uk’s celebrated Studio Shaw has commissioned James to photograph Catching Sun House, a new residential project in east London. The house is nestled in a tight sight between Victorian terraces, and is oriented to make the most of the prevailing light and views.
It’s the fist time James has travelled back tp the UK since the pandemic began. Several other new commissions were completed during the trip, including photography of a remodelled work space in central London for Jonathan Tuckey Design.
